James Kirk was now teaching at Starfleet Academy when his two nephews Alexander and Julius came knocking on his door, asking him to help them colonize a planet that they have named Sanctuary which will be a science research facility for peaceful means. Jim feels that would be a nice change from teaching and even persuades Scotty and Checkov to come along.
Meanwhile, Uhura is being a part of a cultural exchange with the Klingons, preparing for opening night of a Klingon Opera, being the leading lady to the Klingons's "Pavaroti"-Karglak. Spock is with Uhura and Bones is part of a medical conference with the Klingons and Captain Sulu is aboard the Excelcior.
Things seem to be going well on Sancturary when Lissan, leader of the Faloians-the residents of the next door planet to Sanctuary- kept coming to the colonists more frequently than what Alexander was planning on. True that Sanctuary was in his home planet's, Falor's, solar system, at the time of the agreement, Lissan would only come when asked or was necessary. A few weeks after the colonists's ship the MayflowerII landed, Lissan said that his people had also set up a research facility on Sanctuary. This was the start of bad things to come, including the involvment of a few old enemies.
I enjoyed it for the most part, the only things I would hve liked to have read more of are Bones's medical seminar with the Klingons and Uhura's opening night. But still and all, a good story. And the ending was great lead into the storyline of the movie Star Trek VI-The Undiscovered Country- the movie where Kirk is sucked off of the bridge of Enterprise B(C?).This is the last adventue book that will be considered canon. I hope that there will be more new original adventures with them. I hate to see them still being able to have adventures and not doing anything.
