Last night, I was watching this episode and it really is one of the best episodes in what I think was the best season. I loved the theme to this episode, the fact that Obrian played a great lead role, the war song "The Minstral boy" and picards little speech at the end of the episode. (Boy can stewart deliver good threats ;D)
Anyway, every time I see this episode, I always think about the question on wheather Ben Maxwell was right or wrong with what he did. In case you forgot, Maxwell, captain of the USS Phenox went around destroying cardassian ships (Warships and supply ships) because he believed that they were arming supply stations for war again. It also was because of vengence because he had lost his family in a massacure.
So, my question is, do you think maxwwell was right or wrong with what he did. Granted it was against starfleet regulations, but he took the initiative and took matters into his own hands. In a since, if you were maxwell, would you do the same thing and why?
I do think he was right in what he did because he felt so strongly for it. it showed his captain style, and he was the type of person that would ruin his reputation because of his beliefs.

Hiya gdog! To be strictly military, what Maxwell did was disobedience of orders at the very least. One can sympathize with his feelings in our current day, who wouldn't want to at least give a terrorist a kick in the cayunes for their lack of human respect, but as a Starfleet officer, his duty did not include personally made attacks on Cardassian ships and properties. Doing so essentially turned the Phoenix into a pirate ship. Can you picture Kirk or even Picard doing such a thing?

hey starbase,
I agree, if it was strictly military, than what he did was over the line, but starfleet is not a military orginization. Besides, I would see Kirk doing something like that if the stakes were that high. In fact, watching it last night and seeing maxwell, reminded me of when Kirk stole the enterprise to get spock from the genisis planet.

Hi.What he done was not Starfleet policy,it was a type of piracy! But i would have done it.To let an enemy re-arm is a bad policy!!You know they are going to seek revenge,so i would have took out as many ships as possible. Also it would prove their intent, and would take my chances with Starfleet on the issue.Colin.<*>.
