I've mentioned this before but my favorite Doctor is Peter Davison with McCoy second. The Bakers switch between 3rd and 4th depending on my mood.
I've never seen much of the Hatrnell or Troughon episodes or Peter Cushing's performance either.

Colin, you left out Doctor #3, my personal fave, Jon Pertwee. The two Cushing movies really don't count in the actual Doctor Who timeline since a) they were remakes of episodes of the series, b) the Doctor in the movies was not a Gallifreyan, but a human who had invented his own TARDIS, and c) he had two grandchildren instead of one. One might also say you left out the eighth Doctor, Paul McGann as well...

Not only are there so many Doctors to choose from, but the companions... I think the only two that really broke the Doctor's hearts when they left were Sarah Jane and Tegan. The Doctor has been fond of so many of his friends (he even got to like Ian Chesterton after a while), and the likes of Liz Shaw were trusted friends and colleagues, Sarah was like his little sister and best friend, while Tegan was the first he actually seemed romantically interested in. Then there are those like Peri and K9 who were pretty useless...I'll probably catch flak for K9 but I think they could have done a little better...

I don't know what the original origin was meant to be for the First Doctor but I do know the Cushing movies did make him human and turned Barbara and Susan into his granddaughters. My favorite companion is my fair Nyssa. After the Romanas it seemed as if she were the most useful to the Doctor. OK, she was cute too. It would be tough to pick the rest of my top five. The Doctor always had a good crew.

The Doctor was always an alien, though the Time Lords part of the story was not brought to light until "The War Games," Patrick Troughton's final episode. Yeah, McGann was just one appearance, but his movie did pick up where the BBC series left off. Fox did have plans at one point to pick Doctor Who up as a series with McGann in the lead, but the project mysteriously faded away. Nyssa was cute, but Tegan had a toughness Nyssa lacked. She and Leela would have made for a good fight! Sarah Jane was the most compatible to the Doctor's style until she just plain had enough. Hard to pick a favorite!

I think what I liked best about the Davison era is that his Doctor and his companions actually acted like people who had spent time traveling with each other. They were friends who sometimes got on each others nerves.
Leela and Tegan would be formidible foes but I wouldn't want to get on Ace's bad side either.

Colin - I'll check my Peter Haining books and see what the real answer is, it gives the background of Mervyn LeRoy's whole creation process. I'm reasonably sure the Doctor was never intended to be human. That was part of why there was the surprise that Peter Cushing's Doctor (who was actually named Dr. Who, BTW, unlike the true Doctor) was human. Also, how did the Doctor become known as "Doctor Who"? In the first episode, Ian Chesterton calls the Doctor "Doctor Foreman," after the name on the junkyard sign in front of the lot where the TARDIS had landed. The Doctor turned and said "Doctor...Doctor WHO??"

I'll save you the effort ,sb. In Hainings's book "Doctor Who: A Celebration In Time And Space" there is a chapter discussing the Doctor's origin and it seems clear that he was always meant to be alien.

Thanks, bonja...saved me a trip to my bookshelves at my mom's house (not that that's a problem, she only lives five minutes away by foot, but thanks just the same!). I have either three or four of the Haining books, each one excellent. While I was Christmas shopping yesterday, at Circuit City they had a three DVD set, the two Cushing movies with the documentary "Dalekmania!" in a boxed set, I'll have to go back and get it. Only $30.00.
