DS9 remains the one Trek series that I really don't know a whole lot about. When I became interested in Star Trek, the show was already in it's fifth season, and because of that and a veriety of other reasons I never really watched it that much. However, I've heard that it is a great series, and I have enjoyed Babylon 5, which has some similarities to DS9.
So, with the DVD's coming out next year, I'm considering perchasing the series and watching it for the first time on DVD. So what can you tell me about it? What should I expect from the first season? When do we first see the dominion? How does DS9 compare to the other Trek series? Of course, no spoilers, please.

DS9, as I presume you've read me say before, is different in that it has a darker tone than the other titles. Sisko at the beginning of the series has a BIG chip on his shoulder. He is bitter over the loss of his wife aboard the USS Saratoga NCC-31911, which was destroyed by the Borg at Wolf 359, and blames Capt. Picard for the loss, despite the fact that Picard was under the Borg's influence at the time. He is not thrilled with his assignment, either. The first two seasons were okay, but DS9 finally hit its stride in season 3.

The dominion first showed up at the end of the second season. For the first season, expect a newer format to a trek series, one that is more darker than all the others. There is more having to do with religion and politics from what I remember from the first season as well.
I will probably wait till DS9 comes on TNN because even though I would like to see all of them in order because there were some I haven't seen, and it is my second favorite series, I don't think I can afford DVD's with what I was doing this year with TNG.
